Choosing God

{June 18, 2007}   Biology and Bible colide

Sorry for the long absence…been writing exam. But anycase, I wrote biology today…and it’s amazing.

Amazing how a flower can be so complicated. I’m not going to bore you with details. Just the basics. All living things are made up off cells. Each cell has it’s own functions…it needs energy, creates energy. Inside each cell there are smaller organelles which also each has it’s own functions…

Cells come together to create tissue, tissues work together to form organs (like the heart, liver, etc…), organs work together to form different systems in our body, like the digestive system. Different systems work together to form the body… And thats only in humans..

But OK, enough biology for one day…The point I’m trying to make is that something so simple looking – like the human body – is actually very complicated.

A tree seems so uncomplicated, but if we take a closer look, things just widen out. There’s more to it than what the naked eye can see. This made me wonder…

The Bible says that God created the world in 7 days…when I look at just the human body…I find it difficult to believe. Such complexities in such a short amount of time…seems a tad unrealistic… Is there a possibility of those days actually being years???

I know that nothing is impossible for God…but still. God must have tried out some things on plants and humans and not have been satisfied??? Then he changed a few things that everything works perfectly. Is this even possible?? God not being satisfied with his creation??

I think that’s the wonder of the creation story in Genesis. God explained the hugely complicated process of creation to illiterate people with no idea of the science we know today, in terms that they could understand, while still conveying the important ideas behind the story. That’s why I’m saddened by people that insist that Genesis must be read literally, and claim that science like evolution is against the Bible. Can’t they see that God and the way he does things are so much more complicated than we can understand, so he explains stuff in a way we can understand.

I wrote some thoughts on this a couple of months ago.
Biology and the Bible will colide if we try to read the Bible like a biology textbook. It was never the intention of the Bible to be scientifically correct. If we ask scientific questions at the Bible, we will get funny answers.
